"Throw an Audi engineer into a hole with a ladder and he'll fashion a shovel from it to dig himself out."

Could that be the best explanation for German engineering I've ever heard? It might be

"Throw a German engineer into a hole with a ladder and he'll fashion a shovel from it to dig himself out."
There, fixed that for ya.

Throw a GM engineer into a hole with a ladder and he'll start to climb up the ladder, but then accounting will claim the ladder cost too much and replace it with a rope.
Nevertheless, the rope will get the job done...

Throw a Ford engineer into a hole with a ladder, and he'll remake the ladder into a single pole t-ladder with the rungs at double the spacing, so he has a ladder that's two times longer than is needed, but is the devil's own business to climb and may (will) snap in half.
Throw a Chrysler engineer into a hole with a ladder, and he'll make a set of stilts - after they don't work to get out of the hole with, he'll adjust the footpegs about eight times until by shear chance he's high enough to just step out.

Throw a Toyota engineer in a hole with a ladder, and he will climb the ladder. Unless he worked on the prius, in which case he will use one leg to support him while he drags himself up with his arms only.

Throw a Mazda engineer in a hole with a ladder, and he will first trim the ladder to be "sporty", thus requiring him to jump to actually get out. Also, the ladder, in spite of being wood, will have inexplicably rusted.
Throw a Honda engineer in a hole with a ladder, and he will cover all exposed surfaces of the ladder with plastic and reshape the rungs for better ergonomics. He will then recommend the ladder for the use of his American Honda counterpart, who will find the ladder almost impossibly difficult to climb, let alone construct. Despite this, it will be quite affordable.

This is getting fun. Let's add a curveball.
Throw a GOOGLE engineer in a hole with a ladder and he will fashion an elevator out of it, as humans are clearly not designed to operate ladders.

Throw a Microsoft engineer in a hole with a ladder, and while all rungs will be detached and require multiple updates and attempts to arrange them properly, it will be fairly easy for him to do so with the proper tools. The end product will look very similar to the ladder that went in, other than stray nails and some woodborer beetles in the posts.

Throw a British engineer in a hole with a ladder and, inexplicably, the ladder's electronics will fail and electrocute him as he climbs up.
Poor chap.

Throw a Ferrari engineer into a hole with a ladder and he'll set fire to the ladder while climbing it.

Throw a Kinja engineer into a hole with a ladder, and he will attempt to redesign it, in order to "make it better". He will continue to design and redesign the ladder until it's just a pile of six-inch-long sticks. He will never escape, and will die of starvation, alone and in the fetal position.

Yes, and while you are in there you might as well replace every part you come in contact with.
